About the Book

Public LibraryThe Stars Never Rise  (The Stars Never Rise #1), by Rachel Vincent

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she’s too busy trying to actually survive. Her town’s population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she’ll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie’s sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can’t survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

My Review

Soul eaters, demons, exorcists, exorcism, in a dystopian futuristic society… WHOOOO HOOOO!  HELLO DREAMY PREMISE!!! 🙂

I LIKED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!! It was like sooooo weird!

AND I LIKE WEIRD PEOPLE! I DO! I AM WEIRD… SO I LIKE WEIRD 🙂

So… I giggled, giggled, giggled 🙂

I loved the fabulous spins to very familiar concepts.

This book will surprise you in a good way 🙂

You think you knew what a soul is? Think again
You think you knew what demos were? Think again
You think you read everything about demonic possession? Nuh-uh try again
You think you read all that there is to read about church, religion, sin and punishment? All familiar concepts right? NOPE! Try again! Try again! and again!

Holy crap! This is what CREATIVE writing is about!  Did you think Harry Potter was the MOST imaginative book ever??? THINK AGAIN!
YES HARRY POTTER IS THE BEST SERIES EVER!

Everything is just FANTASTIC in Harry Potter right? yes! but.. still…a wizard is a wizard is a wizard.  And dragon is a dragon is a dragon. In The Stars Never Rise… Ok… hum… ok…

“Daniela? Daniela? Say something!”
Wait! I’m still thinking! 🙂
Sorry! I JUST DON’T know what to say! 🙂  Nothing is what you would expect in this book! I thought I had seen it all as far as good books go! It was fun, action-packed, surprising, twisted, very dark and gory.

IT WAS SUPER UNIQUE AND WONDERFUL!

Ok.. I know what to say… YOU GOTTA READ THIS BOOK! 🙂

My most sincere congratulations Rachel! Great job!

I cannot wait to read book 2! 🙂

  1. Hmmm this sounds different, with its sins and exorcists and whatnot. I don’t think I had ever actually read the blurb for this, but I can totally see why you were interested! I usually don’t go for books with too much church and religion stuff, but it seems like maybe this one isn’t really all that religious-y? But dang it, you know I like dark and gory lol.

  6. I kind of go out of my way to avoid books that feature religion.. but the whole exorcists, demons, souls kind of thing sounds super interesting.

So I’ve just now added it on GR and I might try to get to it soonish. Except my pile of ARCs almost looks as bad as yours now… 😉

  7. I really have to try and pre-order the next one if possible. I quite enjoyed this book, it sure was an interesting spin on normal topics. And I really liked the bond between the two sisters.
