In the Spotlight [13]: Author Interview – C.M. Boers (Includes an excerpt from Divulge)

CM Boers

“I am a wife and mother of three. I grew up in the sunshine state of Arizona with a love of reading and an ambition to write. But I never took my writing seriously until after the birth of my first child. After that I took up writing more seriously in my spare time and I haven’t stopped since”

C.M. Thanks for the interview!

D:What inspired Obscured?

I wish I had a super fun or cool answer for this…I don’t. I’ve always loved to write. When I was younger I used to write little stories, none were any good. If fact I always failed horribly in English classes. After my son was born I found that I had a lot of time on my hands while he was napping (ah the life of a stay-at-home mother of one). When I got stuck and didn’t know how I wanted to end it, I put it away for about five years. Five years! I did A LOT of reading over those years, and when I finally picked it up again last year it all came to me. Music probably fueled a lot of that too..

D: What inspired its characters?

My characters, well, Abby is a lot like me. Certain things about her are definitely not me as well though, yet maybe those are qualities I wished I had. As for the other characters, some of them are molded from personal experience as well, but I’m not telling which.. 🙂

D: Can you tell us more about ” The Protectors” and their world?

The Protectors are an amazing group of people that have been born into this life, and while they have the choice to pass up the lifestyle that comes with it and become normal, most choose to selflessly live their lives for others.

D: What authors or books inspired you to become a writer?

When I first began writing Obscured, I had just finished The Twilight series. Yep, totally loved how simplistic her writing was, I said to myself “Maybe I can do this.”

D: Tell us about your experience self-publishing Obscured?

Self-publishing is difficult. It is time consuming. Yet, I wouldn’t choose to do it any other way. I am still learning.

I designed the cover for Obscured myself (photography, photo-shopping, etc..). It was a process that was super simple for what I wanted. As for Divulge (set to release August 1st. ) I hired a cover designer to get a completely different effect and I am super happy to show that off very soon!

My husband is amazing and helped by formatting the e-books for me.

I have had amazing editors who have made things so much easier on me and helped answer questions that were completely unrelated to editing to help me out! I think with Self-publishing so much is different for each author and just finding that balance of what works for you is the hardest. I’ve learned a lot from fellow authors.

D: You have three children! how do you find time to write?

Time…what’s that? Ha! With three kids it is very challenging to find the time. Naptime is essential. My youngest two still nap which is something short of a miracle since my middle child is 5 and starting kindergarten in the fall. On Wednesdays my mother-in-law graciously takes my brood for the day so I can get work done. I also always keep a notebook or my IPad with me so if the mood strikes I can write without hesitation during an extra-curricular or riding in the car.

It certainly takes me more time to finish a novel than the average author because of my limited time, but someday when mom isn’t needed as much, I’ll have the time to write more.

D: When can we expect book 2? Can you share an excerpt with us?

Divulge, Book two, is full of chaos and some new characters. I think there are a few twists that most won’t expect coming. I’m really excited to share it with you! (excerpt below)

D: What other projects are you working on? Can you give us a sneak peek? Excerpt maybe?

Down the road, after The Obscured series, I plan to work more exclusively on a story I started a while ago. This story focuses on a girl who lost everything she thought she would always have in a tragic accident. Excuse any typos or errors.. it is unedited. Here is an excerpt:

“The rearview mirror reveals my parents waving excitedly as I drive away. This was it. This was the last thing I wanted and I wished I would wake up and this had all been some crazy roller coaster of a nightmare. I pinched myself for the thousandth time since that terrible night so I knew it was all too real.
I signaled my turn and got on the highway. I pushed the pedal to the floor and braced myself for the sharp acceleration.
Six hours wasn’t such a long time to drive, but for some reason I felt like it was an overwhelming task and I had to take a deep breath to keep myself from hyperventilating. Maybe it wasn’t the drive I was worried about. “

Excerpt from “Divulge”

“I felt a little like a double agent living a secret life apart from our friends at school. Their biggest concern was their next test or why their parents were on their case this time. Mine was whether I would make it through the day without yet another person coming out of the woodwork to do Eli or me harm. To top it all off, I was having a new nightmare that had a good chance of coming true. We were worlds apart, yet here we sat, all together as if nothing was separating us at all. I longed to be like my friends again, to lead a normal life with normal problems. But then again, I wouldn’t have Eli. Some things were worth the sacrifice”
