Book Review: City of Ashes, by Cassandra Clare

Hello my dear kids bloggers friends. PLEASE VOUCH FOR ME!!!

You ALL know how nice Daniela is with writers right?

You all know that I don’t write bad reviews right? 🙂

I’m sure I made you frowned more than once because of that!

[here comes Daniela with another 4-star review! Doesn’t she EVER read a BAD book??]

I’m a Professional DNFer and a Book Recommender. That’s what I’m!

Not a Book Reviewer 🙂

[Just don’t kick me out of the club pleeease! 🙂 ]

Because if I don’t like it I don’t finish it. And if I don’t finish it I don’t write a review.

Right? It is in my review policy!

So why am I writing a pseudo bad review??? Because…

If you do, you get a pseudo bad review from Daniela!

This book BARELY gets my check marks for ✓ Premise,  and ✓World-building

About the Book

E-bookCity of Ashes , by Cassandra Clare

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation. (less)

My Review

This is the first book I read of this series, and probably the last!  Because this was just a nice mehness and well there are WAY TOO MANY BOOKS I want to read to read mehnesses 🙁

And what is a mehness Daniela???

Well, it is hard to define! I guess it is what you get when you put “Nice” “Meh” “Ugh” “Hell, yeah” “Meh”, “Oh, no, no nooooo” and  mores “Meh”s in a food processor  🙂

Let’s start with the writing. Cassandra is kinda a good writer, so the book was hummm… only kinda ok. Sometimes “meh”, but mostly very “UGH I want to pull big patches of my hair” annoying!

I love my kids, my hair, my hubby, my hair, chocolate, my hair, wine, and… MY HAIR!!

I don’t just go around pulling my hair. So, why did I???

Because of the descriptions!!!!

HOLY COW!! Like pasta left boiling for an hour. Waaaaaaay overdone!

They didn’t slow down the action! THEY ANCHORED IT! THEY BOLTED IT TO THE GROUND.

Hodge Starkweather (Jared Harris) in the Institute LibrarySo… Need three whole paragraphs to describe the Institute, a unique fantasy element never seen? Please do! You know what? Use the whole page. Make a whole chapter about the Institute. Same about the creepy demos Valentine summoned and that made his army. Scorpion demons? Well worth a bunch of paragraphs!

But… FOR GOD SAKE!!!! Why can’t Jace just kneel to see if Clary is ok without the book describing how his adorable features are slowly being rescued from the shadows casted by his hoodie by the pink-golden hues of a sun slowly dying in the horizon??? OMG I was boooored just writing this sentence. Sometimes an action is just an action! Let it just BE that! Jace kneels, concerned darkening his gaze [if you must!] and asks Clary “Are you ok”

Let’s not make EVERY moment an epic moment! PLEEEESASE

Then the premise was a HUGE, LOUD, “HELL YEAH!” Nephilim? Descendants of Angels??? (AKA Shadowhunters) fighting Demons? “YEAH” world domination “AHA!”  Other realms???  “AWESOME!” and we are adding vampires, werewolves, fairies?? AND NO DRAGONS!!! Daniela then explodes and PURE LOVE creates a constellations of stars!

Sooooo… This is why this book deserves a pseudo bad review.

If you do, you get a pseudo bad review from Daniela!

Because this book was RUINED!!! Not only the overly done descriptions but.. the characters!

claryandjace They made me go like “huh? MEH!” MEH MEH MEH!!!. 3-star [and 2.5 of those stars belong to Simon!!] 🙂

So the characters were supposed to be my absolute favorite creatures in all the universes right? Angels, demons, shifters, vampires… the whole forsaken gang. Were they breathtakingly fantastic in the Mortal Instruments??? NOPE they were as hollow as a donut! Steam ironed F.L.A.T.

Maybe with the exception of Simon (human in love with Clary the MC) and Isabelle (shawdowhunter, sister of Jace the other MC). I liked Simon and Isabella a lot.

simonandisabelleThis was one of those books were the main characters were vastly outshined by the secondary characters. Alec (Shadowhunter, Jace’s brother), Luke (werewolves, paternal figure for Clary), Raphael (vampire), etc. They were waaaay more interesting than Jace and Clary. Actually Jace and Clary were so flat that they were kind of annoying! OMG they made Bella and Edward sound like super gigantic layered onions !

The plot… “oh no no no” 2-star!

Again if I wasn’t so crazy about angels and demons stories this would have been a DNF. I read many reviews were people thought this was just another Harry Potter and I have to agree with them!  So many similarities!

Harry Potter [Mortal Instruments] books are about Harry Potter [Jace/Cary]’s life in Hogwarts [The Institute] with his friends Hermione, Ron and Neville and other wizards/mudbloods [Isabella, Alec and Simon and other shadowhunters/downlowers] trying to defeat his supremacist archenemy Voldemor [Valentine] before he gets his hands in the four deadly hallows [Mortal Instruments], and forms and pure-blood army of deatheaters [bad shawdohunters] that would kill all half-blood wizards and muggles [downlowers] so the pure-bloods can [shadowhunters] dominate the world.

I just kept reading because of the world. It was all about the world with this book!

The world-building WHOHOOOOO 5 stars!

So what gives Daniela? make up your mind! Did YOU LIKE IT? ARE YOU FINISHING THE SERIES???

I’m like… speechless with this series. This is another fan fiction mega success like FSoG that goes beyond my comprehension. BUT I do like that there is readers and market for almost all kind of books because that keeps authors motivated to write more books 🙂

So what if I’m in the minority that didn’t like it? Good for Cassandra for capturing so many hearts! ATTA GIRL! 🙂

So… I MAY read book 3. But I’m READING the next book. Now way I’m putting myself again through a Mortal Instruments audio book!! NOOOOOOO I’ll go insane! I already cancelled my request for the next audio book and requested the real book so I can skim through Jace and Clary’s dialogues and overly described scenes. 🙂

What about you my friends? Have you read the Mortal Instruments?
Did you like it? Tell me ALL about it! The good, the bad and the ugly 🙂

  1. I struggled to get through the first book, for all the reasons you listed in this review, and I’ve been so intimidated by the series because I’m really worried I’m not going to like it! My sister is currently reading this one and from what she’s told me I think I’m going to be very :/ about it, haha. Great review 🙂

  3. I have never managed to start this series. I always thought I wanted to, but then there are other books which always take precedent. After reading your review, I am kind of glad I have held off. Like you, I really love my hair and I don’t want to lose any of it in the foreseeable future.

  4. I really enjoyed this series but I am more of a romance reader, so I liked all the detail about how he looked, etc. I struggled more with the first book, but each one did get better so maybe now that I am looking back at it, I don’t remember my frustrations as much!
    Great review!

  5. I actually really enjoyed the first three books in this series, Daniela, but I’ve stopped reading it now… I just can’t anymore.
I do love your review, though!!

  6. I love this series! Well the first 3 books, the rest are okay. I’m not sure why they were made, but they are unnecessary IMO. I really love her Infernal Devices series too. And that series is even better.

  8. Sorry this one was a meh book for you. I have 3 stars that are enjoyable books and enough to keep me reading, but those on the lower end are often the meh books. It’s a shame when that happens. I have heard a lot fo good things about this series, but don’t think it’s for me, I never really got the urge to pick it up. I am glad to hear at least the world building was well done. And reading the next book sounds like a good idea, so you can skip things when necessary.

  9. Yeah, this series was not really a huge win for me either. I read the first few books before I had really read a lot of YA, and so I didn’t dislike them really, but I didn’t loooove them either. But by the time the 6th book came out, I was so BORED! I barely made it through all 700+ pages, it was a struggle!

I definitely do not plan on ever reading a thing with the word “shadowhunter” in it again as long as I live, BUT, like you said, I totally think that it’s awesome that Cassandra can continue this world if she really loves it this much!

  10. Wow 6 books Shannon! Cassandra can’t complain! You did stick with it for a while! 🙂 haha yup I think I cringe at the mention of “shadowhunters” too now. 🙂 I hope to get over that phobia in a couple of months so I can read book 3

  11. Sorry that this was meh for you but what a great review! I really enjoyed reading your review.

  12. 3.5 is bad to you?! Oh no, what you must think of my reviews… lol I give lots of 3.5s and I consider that pretty good, often good enough for me to continue the series. But I suppose the pseudo-negative part you mentioned was in the actual review. I’ve never been interested in this series, just doesn’t seem like my kind of thing. Sorry you didn’t love it though since I know how you like your angels/demons books :-/ The description does sound like a bit much, and I don’t like flat characters either.

  13. haha it is bad for this blog because I only post 3.5 and above so that is the lowest rating possible here 🙂 unless you count all the DNF. Is either DNF or over 3.5 LOL I know right. DON’T DO THAT TO MY ANGELS AND DEMONS BOOKS LOL

  14. You are the first blogger/reviewer who has had anything bad to say about this book. THANK YOU!!! I love how you’re very bold in saying what you liked and DEFINITELY didn’t like about City of Ashes…I bow to your excellence lol. Great review

  15. lol I love your review, so much fun! I have this one to read I confess but I haven’t. I know I need to try because well everyone keeps speaking about it. But well now I’m anxious about the plot and the descriptions but it’s great to see the worldbuilding is so well done!

  16. Oh sorry! I didn’t mean to make you anxious but I’ll be super curious to hear what you thought of it 🙂
